Description
Occupational Certificate: Early Childhood Development Practitioner — SAQA ID 97542
The Occupational Certificate: Early Childhood Development Practitioner is a 131-credit qualification at NQF Level 4 designed to prepare learners to work competently and professionally in the Early Childhood Development sector. It equips learners with the knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience required to support the holistic development, learning, health, safety and wellbeing of young children in both centre-based and non-centre-based ECD settings.
The programme focuses on the planning and preparation of stimulating, inclusive learning environments and developmentally appropriate activities. Learners develop the ability to facilitate and mediate play-based learning, support children’s language, thinking and social development, and respond appropriately to the individual needs of children from diverse cultural, linguistic and developmental backgrounds.
A strong emphasis is placed on child observation and assessment. Learners are trained to observe children’s development, record progress, identify possible developmental barriers or concerns, compile progress reports and use assessment information to inform future learning activities and support interventions.
The qualification also develops essential competencies in health, nutrition, safety, protection and wellbeing. Learners gain knowledge of healthy child development, appropriate nutrition, emergency and safety procedures, child protection, and the creation of safe and supportive ECD environments. They also learn how to establish constructive relationships with parents, families and other service providers.
The programme combines three integrated learning components:
- Knowledge Modules – 43 credits, covering child development theory, programme planning, facilitation, observation and assessment, health and safety, and ECD administration.
- Practical Skill Modules – 43 credits, where learners apply their knowledge through planning learning activities, facilitating active learning, assessing children’s development, promoting wellbeing and managing ECD administrative processes.
- Work Experience Modules – 45 credits, providing structured workplace exposure to programme planning, facilitation, child observation and assessment, and health, nutrition, safety and protection practices.
Successful learners should be able to plan and prepare learning environments, facilitate daily ECD programmes, observe and assess children’s progress, compile developmental reports, and promote the health, nutrition, safety and protection of children.
Entry requirements
Applicants should normally hold either a National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 3 or another recognised NQF Level 3 qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning may also be applied in accordance with the relevant qualification and provider requirements.
Career opportunities
The qualification can support occupational and developmental opportunities such as Early Childhood Development Practitioner, ECD centre practitioner, playgroup practitioner, community-based ECD practitioner, child development support practitioner, or progression toward establishing and managing an ECD service where all applicable registration and regulatory requirements are met.
It also provides an articulation pathway toward further learning, including appropriate NQF Level 5 Early Childhood Development qualifications.
