Higher Certificate in Education — SAQA ID 101813
The Higher Certificate in Education is a 120-credit qualification at NQF Level 5 designed to provide learners with a strong academic foundation for further study in education. It develops essential competencies in academic literacy, information management, teaching and learning, professional practice, learner development, diversity, digital information use and selected subject knowledge.
The programme is particularly suited to learners who have the potential to progress into higher education but require additional academic preparation before entering an undergraduate degree or diploma. It is structured to strengthen learners’ ability to study independently, engage critically with educational knowledge and function effectively within an Open Distance and e-Learning environment.
Learners are introduced to key areas such as academic English, African perspectives on language and knowledge, information skills, ethical use of information and communication technologies, diversity and pedagogy, child and adolescent development, professional teaching practice and practical classroom science. Elective learning may also provide exposure to areas such as mathematics, science, technology, environmental education, life skills and Grade R teaching.
On successful completion, learners should be able to engage with foundational educational knowledge, apply ethical and professional principles, communicate and manage information effectively, take responsibility for their own learning and demonstrate greater readiness for further undergraduate study. The qualification provides articulation possibilities into appropriate Diploma in Education or Bachelor of Education pathways, subject to the admission and articulation requirements of the receiving institution.
